Farm work never ends,.... or gets any easier.
Wow, this farm work is hard. It is not even lunch time and I am poooped, ready for a nap. It has been a big big day already. We had to get up with the roosters this morning, yep they have roosters here, roosters must not sleep they are cockadoodledoin way way before the sun comes up, I dunno how Nanna and Pa put up with it all. Anyways I am getting off track, seems today was the day I had to learn to drive the header. The header is a very important job on the farm, the header strips the wheat off the plant and puts it into the silo. Pa can then sell the wheat and do it all again next year. I dunno about this farming game, Pa said the other day that if he ever won lotto he would just keep farming till it was all gone. I dont know what that means, but I think it means that Pa would like to win lotto.
This morning Daddy took me out to show me what NOT to do when driving the header. It seems that uncle Cowan (the chief header driver) has an attraction to mud and he gets the thing bogged all the time.
Pa said that getting the header bogged is bad, because you might pull it in half when you try and get it out of the bog. I think that would be bad.
Here I am checking out of few of the bog holes that Cowan left. big eh? But what Daddy didnt tell me was that when he was driving the chaser bin he did this.....
Yep, he bogged the chase way worse than that header. Pa needed to get the biggest tractor he owns to pull this sucker it. It was fully loaded too, so that didnt help. But Daddy sure didnt tell me about this, Uncle Cowan dobbed him in.
So then Daddy showed me how to drive the chaser bin. The chaser man has to chase the header all over the paddock, when the header box is full of wheat it unloads into the chaser bin. Then the chaser driver has to drive back to the silos and unload. Then he has to chase after the header again to get another load. That is a lot of chasing, so I guess that is why they call it a chaser bin.
So daddy gave me lessons on driving the Tractor the pulls the chaser bin:
Well I got that licked pretty quick didnt I? Then it was on to learning how to tow the chaser. It is pretty big, but I rekon I can do it.
Well it seems all easy enough, just fill er up and dump it in the silos, easy. Except that I can not reach the pedals, seems you need to use the pedals a lot to drive the chaser. So that is out. Bugger that would have been funner. Maybe next year I can drive the chaser, my legs will be longer then.
Daddy said that they Header is better to drive because you do not need to use the pedals to drive that, it is all hand operated. Yippee, Looks like I am gunna become the chief header driver.
Here is what the Header looks like, it is big and very expensive, so I better be carefull with it.
Uncle Cowan had to give me a few lessons from the "training seat".
But little did he know, I didnt need lessons. I went and read the owners manual last night, so i was good to go. You just push the lever to go forward and pull it back to stop and go back. Then the other buttons make the front go up and down and stuff to make the wheat go into it. It is pretty technical, and you probably would not understand anyway, so I will not bore you with the technicalities of how it all works, just be assured that it does and I can drive it..
But it seems Uncle Cowan was not budging from his seat, he would not let me take over the reins. I rekon he was scared that I was going to show him up and drive for a whole day without getting bogged. That made me grumpy, so I had to go home again. All the effort this morning for nothing.
So when I got home...
I gave Pip the lazy sheep dog a huge mouthfull for being a lazy mongrel and not helping on the farm at all. Not like me. I am a good helper.
But it looks like my farm hand days are over for a while, we are heading back to the big smoke this afternoon. Hopefully we will see City Nanna and Grandad on the way.
